Bastille - "Fünf" (You Need It! Exclusive Mix)

1// Profession, Age, Hometown?
We (Michael & Julien) are both 21 year old students from Los Angeles, CA.

2// Why music?
Music has always been a passion of ours. We find that music is what keeps us sane with all the other crap going on around us.

3// When did you both start producing?
We both come from very musical backgrounds, so the ideas for melodies, bass lines, and beats were always kind of there. We were in this sort of fake band before we started producing where I (Julien) played bass, and Michael played piano. It really didn't start until we got our hands on software. Computers let us make all these sounds real.

4// How did you meet each other and decided to work together?
We've been friends since middle school. We started playing music together in high school but it wasn't until Michael got his hands on a copy of Reason that making electronic music became the obvious choice. He started putting full songs into the program and played with effects fir fun. One fateful day we were in my friend's back house and Michael pushed me to try my hand at it. Immediately we knew this was what we needed to do.

5// How do you work in a team? Are there particular roles?
Michael generally starts with the beat, which goes like bam bam bam bam bam bam, and then I am all like bloopy blip with some synth parts and transitions and buildups. We also go sample hunting all the time. We like to relate what we do to Navy Seals.

6// How did you get you name? And what does "Bastille" mean?
France, bitch. They stormed that shit so they could be free/have democracy. We want people to rage and storm as we throw down some classy ass shit.

7// Where do you get your Music from?
We make it. This is why you're interviewing us, right? ;)

8// Which city has the best nightlife for you? Any locations in particular?
It's hard not to say LA as that's where we live. Always stuff to do and see. I imagine if I lived in New York it would be the same way, but not as electronically oriented.

9// Best Event you have played so far?
The Masquerave at Wesleyan University. There are some sweet pics of us shirtless in a sweaty dorm basement. Even a sick video of Michael crowd surfing. #badass

10// Which are your favorite acts and who has the main influences on your sound?
Lionel Richie.

11// Justice or Daft Punk?
Even though Justice was really what got us full on into EDM, we've been listening to Daft Punk since before we knew what it was. We've always wanted to see Daft Punk, a dream that seems to be becoming more and more impossible.

12// 80s or 90s?
70s.

13// MP3, CD or Vinyl?
We listen to the radio.

L' Étranger - "Vier" (You Need It Exklusive Mix) by You Need It!

1// Profession, Age, Hometown, Resident at/present Partys?
L'Étranger, 19 ⅔, Kendal, None

2// How did you get in touch with music for the first time? Which kind of Music?
Music/the arts have present all my life, my parents used to be actors and the first music I was really into was Jazz Fusion and Bee Gees (those were the first CDs I asked my parents to buy me age 4).

3// How did you get to Electronic Music? Where did you get your influences?
I've loved electronic music all my life, I guess the first time I really embraced it in my songwriting was in 2007, whilst writing solo material in conjunction with a band I was in at the time. From then onwards I really got into 'IDM/Braindance' I'm a massive Richard D. James fan, I like some of Squarepusher's stuff too. I guess the main reason I decided to stop my other projects and start creating 'french touch' influenced stuff, was because growing up in the '90s/2000s I was subconsciously bombarded with Daft Punk/Cassius/Alan Braxe, cause that's what was popular at the time. And looking back, when I rediscovered these artists/songs, it gave me a real sense of nostalgia; reminiscing back on my childhood, which I feel is important quality for music to have.

My main musical influences are, Brian Wilson: The father of popular music. The Beach Boys. Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine. Jaco Pastorius and Joe Zawinul of Weather Report. Tavares. Bee Gees. Ludwig Van Beethoven. Vaughan Williams. Karlheinz Stockhausen. Arnold Schoenberg. Frank Zappa. The Smiths. Richard D James. And of course Thomas and Guy-Man of Daft Punk!

The three albums that have had the greatest impact on my music are The Beach Boys' 'Pet Sounds', My Bloody Valentine's 'Loveless' and Daft Punk's 'Discovery'.

4// When and why did you start producing?
I remember when I was a toddler, my favourite 'toy' was this bulky Fisher Price tape cassette recorder. I used to love recording sounds/melodies and half press the rewind and play buttons to hear the tape reversed. When I was a bit older, I'd get two cassette players, record myself playing guitar/keyboard on one, play it back on the other whilst recording layers of music over each track. The quality was shit, but I've always needed to put down musical ideas in my head.
From then I used to do the same thing with the first Microsoft 'Sound Recorder' on '95 computer, and then went on to use Cool Edit Pro (that was a fantastic bit of software). When I got my first iMac, (I was about 12/13) every night I'd record new songs, and record the material of the bands I was in. When the iMac gave up the ghost, I got a MacBook Pro and started using Logic, and then went on to Ableton Live.

5// How do you work? What do you work with? What is the way you produce a new track or a remix/ re-edit?
I'll have an idea in my head. I'll create a rough synthesiser, record a couple of parts, then start working on the sound of the kicks/snares and get a really decent sidechain going. Then I'll record different guitars through amps, run stuff from Ableton through the amps and record back into Live, etc. If there's a sample that'll work, I'll sample from CDs, mess about on my CDJs get a nice pitch and whatnot, record it into Ableton Live.
Once I've got all my tracks and everything mixed nicely, I'll record as much as I can live using my APC 40.
Then I'll spend hours automating pretty much every parameter I can.

I'll do the mastering in Logic Pro.

6// There are a lot of tracks from you coming out right now. What comes next?
Well, sometime this week (sorry I haven't been given the exact release date) my remix for Guillemots' 'I Must Be A Lover' is gonna be released as a free download on their Soundcloud. I finished that back in May, so it's been a long time coming. I can't wait for everyone to hear it.

An exclusive 6 minute extended mix of my latest track 'Touch' is going to be released on So Sound's next 'Hotel Voyage' compilation.

I'm working on a second remix for Guillemots, and hopefully a few more big names could be in the pipe-line, I'll keep everyone updated.

I'm going to be doing an hour-long bi-weekly radio/DJ show on This Is Fake DIY's website. It'll be Saturdays @ 11:00 pm and I'll be playing all things frenchy and touchy. My first show is gonna be on the 5th November.

I'm going to be releasing a single on So Sound later this year, with remixes from Les Loups and an artist who shall remain nameless for the time being.

January 20th I'm heading over to Hnnover to play the second 'Paradisco' show set up by Les Loups @ Mephisto, all my German homies should DEFO come! Then the next week I'll be heading over to Rotterdam in Holland to play a few shows with Disko-Matique (dates tbc).

Then in January I'll be releasing my first EP entitled '1997'.

7// What was your greatest memory with music?
Around October/November 2008, I saw Beethoven's 9th Symphony twice, once at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester, and then at the Sage in Gateshead. The third movement is really powerful, and has some deep meanings for me.

Either that, or last September I went to see Brian Wilson at the Bridgewater Hall. He is my idol, and I feel I'm indebted to him. I was sitting on the front row, and when he sang 'God Only Knows' he stared right at me, during probably the most poignant line of the song. Once he'd finished the entire audience clapping in standing ovation for literally 5 minutes. You don't get many times like these, when when you do it really does bring a lump to one's throat.

8// What is it with the name? How did you come up with it?
I started using 'L'Étranger' a year and a half ago, it comes from the novel by Albert Camus. It fits, cause I've always been somewhat of an outsider for a lot of my life, in a good sense of course. And because I'm an Englishman creating primarily french influenced music, I'm definitely an outsider in that context!

9// What is your favourite label at the moment?
Ed Rec

10// Beatport or Itunes?
Neither, I prefer to buy CDs, but I tend to use beatport more often to buy tracks from my peers.

11// Stardust - Music Sound Better With You OR Mylo - Drop The Pressure?
Stardust - Music Sounds Better With You; It's my favourite song of all time.

12//Etienne De Crécy or Alan Braxe?
Alan Braxe

// Profession, Age, Hometown, Resident at/present Partys?
Michael: Profession: DJ/Producer Hometown: Vista Californian Resident: NoneZac: Profession: Producer/DJ Age:21 Hometown: Oceanside California Resident: None

2// How did you get in touch with music for the first time? Which kind of Music?
Growing up both our parents have always listen to music, Zacs family listen to Rock N Roll, Indie Music, and Punk. Michaels family listen to Salsa, Freestyle, and Hiphop. From there the two of us went through the middle school trying to find your identity phase lol, which led us to Heavy Metal, and Death Metal. From there we both discovered Funk and Jazz in high school, and soon after we graduated we fell in love with all the Motown collections and eventually House music.

3// How did you get to House and Frenchhouse music? What espacially do you like about the sound?
We got into House after one of us dated an Asian girl who was a candy raver heavy into Electro and Dutch House. Needless to say we were not much into those scenes but it did spark our interest in house music and led us to finding sample based house music, we couldn’t get enough of it.

4// When did you both start producing?
We both started at the same time two years ago, Zac started alittle earlier when he was in high school messing around with fruit loops, eventually we found Ableton Live and started to get serious about music production and focused on learning as much as we could about the program.

5// How did you meet each other and decided to work together?
We both attended the same middle school in 4th grade and since then we have been best friends. In middle school we both bought guitars and started to teach ourselves how to play, from there we formed a few bands with close friends of ours. But keeping bands together was tuff since four people in a band have to be committed. After our last band broke up we still wanted to make music with eachother, which led us to making house music and using Ableton Live.

6// How do you work in a team? Are there particular roles?
We share the same roles in Geisha Twins, but since there is two of us we like to divide the work load. One of us will focus on production and the other will get our live performances ready, promotion, keep in contact with artist and labels.

7// What is it with the name? How did you come up with it?

Growing up we both were always interested in Japanese culture, especially once we were introduced to Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo. One day the name Geisha was pitched when we were both trying to come up with a new alias for our Disco House and Funky House music. But being that there is two of us we came up with the Twins at the end which made it have a nice ring to it.

8// Where do you get your Music from?
It depends sometimes we will get promos from labels, or we will beatport search endlessly, or we will listen to artist mixtapes and discover new music.

9// Whats your favourite club/location?
It would have to be Voyeur, we haven’t DJ there yet but we have seen a lot of artist we idolize DJ there and the whole atmosphere is amazing. They have a monster sound system and huge LED lights, and some of the most beautiful go go dancers you will ever see, its located in San Diego.

10// Best Event you have played so far?
Our best show would have had to been when we headlined in Salinas California at the Fox Theater. We DJ an event hosted by Electrify Events which was one of the most amazing shows ever, the whole theater was packed with people even the stage we were on. Nothing but friends and family dancing all night smiling till the break of dawn.

11// Cassius or Daft Punk?
Daft Punk for sure, we grew up with One More Time playing on all the dance music channels growing up, and listening to Discovery in high school

12// Crydamoure or Roulé??
Ah couldn’t pick one >_< both of the artist who made the labels put out some of the most talented artist around on it. It would have to be both!

13// MP3, CD or Vinyl?
Vinyl
